Sabías qué • La once

Did you know that • The eleventh

All Chileans have eaten eleven at some point, a traditional national meal that is enjoyed in the afternoon, when the sun goes down and the day ends. Eleven o'clock, in addition to being a time when we eat, is a ritual that brings us together around a good table and a good conversation.

But where does this concept come from? Although not fully proven, theories say that the term was coined to refer in a hidden way to aguardiente, an alcoholic beverage whose name has 11 letters and that was usually drunk around noon during colonial times. Another hypothesis associates our local custom with the famous English "tea time", a custom that would have been introduced by the British colonists in the port of Valparaíso.

And you, what do you like to drink eleven with?
